South Tyrol

The chalet architecture, alpine landscape and hearty food all suggest that Italy's Northeasterly region of South Tyrol shares more identity with bordering Austria than with Italy itself, the majority here even speaking German. The jagged peaks of the Dolomites provide the backdrop to the region, interspersed with azure lakes and wildflower meadows.

A skiing destination in winter, many of the cable cars remain in use throughout the summer months, allowing easy access to alpine meadows, including Europe's largest, Alpi di Suissi. Travelling at this time of the year also gave us the chance to take a dip in the beautiful but chilly Lago di Braies, joining the picturesque rowing boats on the water.
